red winged blackbirds are back

One of the first signs of spring here is the return of the red winged blackbirds. He looks excited to be back. The winter regulars don't seem too impressed.

The return of the red wings is always a good sign of spring. I haven't seen any in our garden yet.

We look for the Robin here. My husband thought he heard one yesterday but couldn't find it. When they come too early though everyone worries that they will have problems because they are meat eaters and need the worms. If the earth is frozen they can't find food. We don't see red wings until a little later.

I've been fascinated by the idea of redwing blackbirds since I first read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance about 30 years ago. Redwing blackbirds, cardinals, hummingbirds, not to mention funny little American robins - I can see I'm going to have to add a visit to Wisconsin to my wish list !

I have red wings for the first year ever! I didn't even know what these birds were when I first noticed them outside at the feeders. I had to pull out my trusty birding book and do a little research.

Happy Planting!
