It was only a matter of time

The first of the grackles have arrived back. While I welcome back the red winged blackbirds, I was kind of hoping the grackles would forget to return. They nest in our pine trees and make a big mess around here.

Enjoyed your photos! Where in WI are you? I'm in River Falls and haven't seen much for seasonal birds yet, just a few horned larks. Can't wait to get out in the gardens this spring! Erin J.

I just noticed them here in Ohio! I actually had no clue what they were at first...just a big group of 20-some birds descending onto my deck!

Just when I think I've found out about all the birds you have which are different to here, you find me another one :) What in the world is a grackle? Is it a type of blackbird? It looks vaguely starling-like to me.
It also reminds me of a bird I used to see a lot in Japan, but have never been able to name, despite searching the internet and bird books ever since. They flew in flocks, had a really loud, raucous cry, and their wings flashed metallic blue in the sun. Any resemblance?
